Mark in Indy

"We the people" of Indianapolis have been calling for a return to rail-based public transportation for as many years as I can remember. We once had the best rail transit system in America, perhaps the best in the world in the early 20th Century. The interurbans and streetcars that criss-crossed our city formed a remarkable network of urban accesibility. Then came the "streetcar conspiracy" of the 1940's and '50's in which the American public was lead to believe that diesel buses were the wave of the future for inner-city travel. The streetcars gave way to the trackless trolleys; which then gave way to the GM diesel buses. Everyone I've spoken to about the return of the streetcars is excited at the prospect: "It's about time!" is a commonly heard response. I certainly agree! Highways link the sections of a city with concrete, but streetcars bond a city with "soul".

Thanks for the post, Mark. Sounds like you've read "The Geography of Nowhere" by Jim Kessler.

Good luck with your streetcar movement. I don't think Indy will regret it!
